Instrument information

Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is one of the excellence method for molecular structure elucidation, of organic and bio-molecule. It is also a tool to study interaction of various molecules, the kinetics or dynamics of molecules and the composites. NMR at the Department of Chemistry offers services to both University and outside users. We provide technician-based analytical services and also provide technical support in the manual operation of equipment to graduate students who are interested in self-service. Most of our equipment is operated hands-on by trained graduate students. Staff are on hand to advise and train students, to run more complicated experiments and to run outside requests. All FT-NMR system are liquid NMR.

Application Form

Guidleline to user on Sample Preparation

  • NMR tubes: Quality has to comply with requirement for your NMR experiment. We are using 5 mm NMR tubes for all our spectrometers.
  • The “standard” NMR tubes had to be at least 15 cm long.
  • Solvent: Choice of the solvent depends on the solubility of your sample, chemical shift of the residual protons in 1H NMR and position of signals in 13C NMR (position of the solvent peaks can overlap with signals from your compound), chemical (solvent should be inert towards your compound) and physical (b.p., m.p., viscosity need to be considered while doing VT NMR experiments) properties of the solvent.
  • For 1H routine proton, weight of the sample should be at least 6mg and for 13C experiment, the sample should have at least 8mg.
  • The sample then dissolved in 0.7 ml of deuterated solvent.
  • The height of solution in nmr tube should be 4.5 to 5 cm
  • If there is any precipitate in your sample, please filter the sample using cotton wool and pasture pipette during transferring solution into nmr tube. The solution should be free from solid particles.
