Instrument information

FT-NMR stands for "Fourier Transform Nuclear Magnetic Resonance," and it's a powerful analytical technique used to study the structure and properties of molecules at the atomic level.  The most common application of FT-NMR is for structural analysis of organic compounds, natural products, protein drug interactions, and polymers.

FT-NMR ECX 400 was bought in 2014.  It is ECX series of JEOL NMR and the 3rd NMR from JEOL in Chemistry Department after LAMBDA and ECA.  The feature of FT-NMR ECX 400:

  • High-Resolution Spectroscopy: Experience precise and detailed insights into molecular structures with the ECX 400's high-resolution capabilities, enabling you to unravel the complexities of various compounds.
  • Versatile Applications: Whether you're working in pharmaceuticals, materials science, or any other field, the FT-NMR ECX 400 adapts to various applications, delivering results that drive innovation.

Guidleline to user on Sample Preparation

  • NMR tubes: Quality has to comply with requirement for your NMR experiment. We are using 5 mm NMR tubes for all our spectrometers.  The “standard” NMR tubes had to be at least 15 cm long.
  • Solvent: Choice of the solvent depends on the solubility of your sample, chemical shift of the residual protons in 1H NMR and position of signals in 13C NMR (position of the solvent peaks can overlap with signals from your compound), chemical (solvent should be inert towards your compound) and physical (b.p., m.p., viscosity need to be considered while doing VT NMR experiments) properties of the solvent.
  • For 1H routine proton, minimum weight of the sample is 6mg and for 13C experiment, the sample should have at least 8mg (the experiment time is around 16 hours).
  • The sample then dissolved in 0.6 ml of deuterated solvent.  The height of solution in nmr tube should be 4.5 to 5 cm.  If there is any precipitate in your sample, please filter the sample using cotton wool and pasture pipette during transferring solution into the nmr tube.  The solution should be free from solid particles.
